BB guns and air guns are becoming popular among youths. In order to help prevent injuries to youths and others, it is important for parents to know and understand the law pertaining to BB guns and air guns (this law does not make exceptions for Airsoft type guns and paintball guns). In order to legally possess and discharge these BB guns and air rifles, the following law must be adhered to:
M.G.L. Chapter 269 Sec. 12B states:
No minor under the age of eighteen shall possess an air rifle or so-called BB gun while in any place to which the public has a right of access unless:
1. He is accompanied by an adult or
2. He is the holder of a sporting or hunting license and has on his person a permit from the chief of police of the town in which he resides granting him the right of such possession.
No minor under the age of eighteen shall discharge a BB shot, pellet or other object from an air rifle or BB gun unless he is accompanied by an adult or is the holder of a sporting or hunting license.
No person (regardless of age) shall discharge a BB shot, pellet or other object from an air rifle or so-called BB gun into, from or across any street, alley, public way or railroad or railway right of way.
